Big Update on Reservation Policy in J&K: Omar Abdullah Makes Major Statement
Jammu, 4 November: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday firmly stated that the Jammu and Kashmir government will fully comply with the Supreme Court’s 50% cap on reservations, stressing that there is complete transparency in the government’s policy decisions. His remarks come amid rising debate over the reservation structure in the Union Territory.
Speaking to reporters soon after assuming charge at the Civil Secretariat in Jammu, Omar dismissed allegations that his government was hiding details about the reservation policy. “What’s there to hide? If we had wanted to conceal anything, we wouldn’t have mentioned it in our manifesto.
The entire discussion started only after the National Conference brought it into public debate. Those who are now acting as champions of open merit — where were they all these years?” Omar said, hitting back at critics.
The Chief Minister further revealed that the cabinet subcommittee formed to review the reservation policy has already submitted its report. “It is our full intention to comply with the Supreme Court’s direction that reservations should not exceed 50%. The process will be transparent, fair, and in full accordance with constitutional norms,” he added.
Omar also underlined that his government is committed to protecting the rights of every community while ensuring that no section feels excluded.
He said the National Conference has always believed in striking a balance between social justice and merit, and this principle will continue to guide the administration’s actions.
Reaffirming his government’s stand, Omar concluded, “We are not running away from any discussion. If there was anything to hide, we would not have brought it into the public domain. We have made our position clear — we will follow the law of the land.”
